The Knockemout series is set in a fictional rough-and-tumble town of the same name in Virginia, providing an energetic backdrop for a madcap romantic comedy series.

Ever since Lucy Score hit the bestseller list this series has been a favourite of romance readers, chronicling the highs and lows, adventures and passion of three couples pressing against the limits of small town life. Explore the tales of Knox and Naomi, Nash and Lina, and Lucian and Sloane, featuring runaway brides, evil twins, furious enmity and burning desire.

‘I laughed. I cried. I laughed while I cried, and I definitely blushed’ - Book Addict

We chatted with designer Holly Macdonald, who worked with the team at Hodder & Stoughton, to learn more about how these beautiful hardbacks came together.

What vision did the team at Hodder have for these editions?

Holly Macdonald: We wanted to create a set of books that referenced the designs of the standard editions, but in a more luxe or decorative style, to appeal directly to a special edition readership and Lucy's fans.

How did you make your design choices?

Holly: It was particularly important to create designs that best allowed for special finishes. I drew the illustrated motifs based on elements from the standard edition covers, but in a more graphic style which allowed me to create decorative patterns that could be foiled.

I used a slightly unusual serif typeface for the titles to add to the more upmarket 'gift' appeal, but kept Lucy’s name in a cleaner sans serif font to add modernity to the design.

How did you decide on the colour scheme? It's gorgeous!

Holly: We considered a variety of colour palettes, including having different backgrounds and foil colours for each cover. We decided on the blue tones as these were a particular favourite of Lucy's!

Having each book a slightly different tone of blue again gives the set a sense of cohesion, but I also always consider how the finished product will look on a reader's bookshelf. I like the fact that this set will have a subtle ombre effect when displayed in a reader's home!

The Knockemout Trilogy is due for publication on the 7th August 2025.
