Enter the town of Derry...

Derry, Maine is just an ordinary town: familiar, well-ordered for the most part, a good place to live. It is a group of children who see - and feel - what makes Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, It lurks, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes It appears as an evil clown named Pennywise and sometimes It reaches up, seizing, tearing, killing...

Time passes and the children grow up, move away and forget. Until they are called back, once more, to confront It as It stirs and coils in the sullen depths of their memories, emerging again to make their past nightmares a terrible present reality.

About the author

Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, USA, in 1947. In 1971, he began teaching high school English classes while writing short stories for magazines and working on novels in the evenings and at weekends. It was the publication of Carrie in 1974 and its firm film adaptation that set him on the way to his present position as a No. 1 bestselling author. Carrie was followed by over seventy bestsellers, including Misery, The Shining, Fairy Tale and Never Flinch.

The idea for IT first came to King when he was walking to collect his car from a dealership in Colorado. He crossed a wooden bridge over a stream in cowboy boots with rundown heels and thought about the fairy tale of 'The Three Billy--Goats Gruff'. Years later, he started to imagine the tunnels underneath his home town of Bangor, and the bridge across which every goat of a child must risk trip-trapping to become an adult. He wondered how it might be possible to create a ricochet effect, interweaving the stories of children and the adults they become and realised he had to write about the troll under the bridge or leave him - It - forever.
